The successful candidate:

This is a PRN position.

The Surgical Technician facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedures are conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Ensures quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintenance of the sterile field.

  • Collects patient data and completes required documentation with appropriate responses according to unit standards. Identifies patient's problems/needs and sets priorities. Performs assessment using critical thinking skills and responds appropriately.

  • Maintains stocks of supplies and equipment. Disposes of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards. Maintains a clean, orderly environment. Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.

  • Provides treatments/procedures and other care as prescribed and according to patient care standards and plan of care. Demonstrates understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients served. Identifies emergency situations and independently initiates appropriate actions. Acts as an advocate and coordinator of patient care with other health care personnel and evaluates patient care measures instituted. Understands and demonstrates respect for patient rights and utilizes established mechanisms for management of ethical issues in patient care. Acts as a consultant to the healthcare profession, patient or caregiver regarding patient advocacy and delivery of safe, competent, and quality perioperative care.

  • Prepares medications per policy. Follows hospital-based policy regarding equipment maintenance and infection control measures. Prepares, anticipates and is available for procedure. Participates in orientation of new personnel through preceptorship.

  • Schedules and monitors patient appointments both internally and externally. Coordinates routine holding, education and PACU. Educates patient regarding schedule. Provides care conform to accepted practice standards (AORN, AST).

  • Evaluates effectiveness of care and notifies appropriate personnel of issues.

  • Covers for and assists with other functions as requested. Monitors patient flow, clerical duties and other tasks to assure smooth unit operations. Greets patients and arranges for hospital admission and laboratory services. Responds to incoming calls in a timely, friendly manner and assist callers; checks and responds to e-mails.

  • Complies with policies addressing safe working conditions; monitors and reports unsafe working conditions.

  • Integrates cost effective measures manages costs while rendering quality patient care.

Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Graduate of an accredited surgical technologist training program

Experience, Licensure & Certifications Required

  • Certification eligible

  • BLS Certified

  • Participation in continuing education programs

  • 2 years surgical tech experience preferred

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $28.59 - $47.04 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
