The Medical Support Specialist is an individual who possess the skills and knowledge necessary to deliver specific patient care services to both oncology and non-oncology patients at the direction of a Registered Nurse, physician, or Advanced Practice Provider (APP). The Medical Support Specialist actively supports the efforts of the health care team through the delivery of various services both administrative and clinical in a prompt, accurate, and courteous manner.
As a successful candidate, you will:
- Provides accurate, reliable, courteous, and timely services to all customers; demonstrating excellence in customer service both written and verbal. Communicates and collaborates with appropriate staff.
- Effectively communicates with all customers and team members to meet organizational goals and to provide customer satisfaction.
- Delivers assigned patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse in a manner consistent with the scope of practice of their discipline and the standards established by City of Hope as expressed in the plans for provision of care and policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates competence appropriate to their role and function in high risk and/or problem prone behaviors.
- Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments prior to patient appointment.
- Replenishes supplies, stocks, and cleans exam rooms daily.
- Takes medical stock inventory and communicates supply shortages to Clinical Leadership.
- Proactively and as requested acquires outside medical records and images prior to patient appointment.
- Provides support to providers (as indicated and needed) inclusive of performing vital signs, EMR entry, chaperoning visits, scheduling follow up appointments (as indicated), room turnover, and charge reconciliation. Responsible for reporting any abnormal results per established criteria to the appropriate licensed clinician.
- Assists with procedures based upon location’s services.
- Administers injections as deemed appropriate by COH guidelines.
- Performs EKGs as needed in adherence with COH guidelines and training.
- May perform phlebotomy and specimen collection in accordance with physician order using appropriate techniques and equipment with appropriate licensure.
- Responsible for maintaining a safe environment for patients and families.
- Disposes of contaminated items according to OSHA guidelines.
- Assists with the transference of sterile and disinfected instruments to and from the sterile processing area.
- Assists with telehealth visits to include but not limited to chart prep, contacting patient prior to appointment, completing virtual rooming process, supporting patient during virtual visit, completing visit wrap-up, scheduling test and off-site procedures where indicated.
- Addresses EMR assignments (e.g., InBasket messages) per COH turnaround times, My City of Hope messages within guidelines, and other assigned tasks in maintaining key performance indicators in the EMR.
- Cross trained to cover both patient visits and the infusion clinic inclusive of scheduling.
- Actively participates in performance improvement activities to continuously improve service delivery.
- Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by appropriate and timely use of organizational resources
- Attends daily huddles, staff meetings and completes appropriate and required training.
- Participates in a collaborative, empowered work environment as demonstrated through teamwork.
- Maintains current knowledge and skills through attendance and participation in organizational and departmental meetings and continuing education activities.
Your qualifications should include:
High School Graduate or equivalent AND
Graduate from oneof the following:
- Graduate of a Nursing assistant program
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant program
Required Certification/Licensure:
- AHA BLS Certification
- Certification as a Nursing Assistant with active license/certificate OR
- Medical Assistant with active license/certificate.
- Required to maintain active license during employment in the role.

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $23.34 - $30.39 / hour
The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
