Position Description

As Senior Campus Planner, you will be part of a vibrant, growing team with varied backgrounds, areas of focus, and skillsets. Our department is responsible for all planning, design, and construction activities at Harvard Medical School. As part of this team, you will independently lead both comprehensive and targeted feasibility studies, including for renewal, either done in-house or through the management of external consultants.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Planning for Renewal the Senior Campus Planner will partner with various stakeholders representing all facets of facility services, research, education and administrative departments, and consultants to propose innovative solutions. In this position, you will play a crucial role in informing project planning and long-range multi-year capital planning.

You may have had a background in planning, design, engineering, project management or other. On past projects, you may have built a familiarity with building systems, facilities condition assessments, lifecycle, and decarbonization planning through your project work. Core Duties:

• Manage and lead complex strategic planning and feasibility studies for the short and long-term development of the school, including existing use, campus growth, and multi-year capital plan integration. Determines and recommends initiatives in areas of focus and contracts with all necessary firms and specialty consultants required for successful completion of project. Identifies and recommends scope or approach to improve effectiveness of feasibility studies.
• Lead strategic project planning. Establish high level scopes of work, urgency assessments, alternates, schedules, and target budgets for program and funding approval.
• Evaluate and identify alternative strategies, design approaches, and construction solutions on a regular frequency to ensure highest and best use of the school's physical and financial resources.
• Identify opportunities to integrate University and School carbon neutrality, decarbonization, and carbon zero goals into proposed projects.
• Establish project program, budget, scope, timeline, or delivery of proposed project plans to address risk and maximize opportunities for a successful project.
• Mediate solutions for issues and facilitates consensus building amongst stakeholder groups with varying priorities and viewpoints.
• Manage campus renewal portfolios as assigned. Perform condition assessments and analysis. Presents findings and recommendations to leadership. Outline high level scope definition for improvements on spaces and assets identified for improvements annually.

Additional Duties:

• Lead project teams including end user and stakeholder groups, leadership, and HMS department representatives.
• Oversee the selection process and management of A/E firms, consultants, and contractors.
• Identify budgeting and garners project and funding approvals. Effectively transitions approved projects to project management staff.
• Ensures program, goals, and objectives defined in planning are implemented in design and construction phases.
• Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, planning or other relevant fields required.
• 8+ years of experience in related area with increasing responsibilities.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

• Demonstrated understanding of building systems including HVAC equipment and systems, linear infrastructure and decarbonization planning.
• Knowledge of renewal best practices.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and/or Revit, Microsoft Office.
• Experience in renewal or infrastructure planning highly preferred.
• License, certification or master's degree preferred.
• Experience collecting and analyzing large amounts of data.
• Strong analytical, presentation and communication skills.
• Strong problem solving and decision-making skills.
• Client-service approach to projects.
• Knowledge of cost estimation and scheduling.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to foster a solid working relationship with a variety of customers and constituents, including senior administration and faculty, as well as technical and operations staff.
• Works equally well independently and in collaborative environments.
• Ability to manage multiple projects of varying sizes with internal and external stakeholders simultaneously.
• Proven ability to manage and resolve issues, under a variety of circumstances and urgency, with insight, diplomacy, and sensitivity, as well as coordinate and direct a multi-disciplined team which includes managers and peers independently and effectively.
• Familiarity with City, State, and Federal codes and ordinances.
• Knowledge with lab building construction and renovations in both new and aged facilities requiring coordination of utility and or structural impacts to occupied research facilities.
• Familiarity with project management, architecture, engineering, design, and construction best practices.
• Project management experience preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain project budgets and schedules, as well as plan and manage projects to achieve deadlines and objectives.
• Knowledge of and ability to identify project risks.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
