What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking Materials Science Engineer to support the growing lithium ion and lithium primary battery projects in Department 7545. Our products are based on several different battery chemistries and include both lithium primary and secondary cells. This department provides engineering design and development support to the Power Sources Technology Group (PSTG) at Sandia for Nuclear Deterrence (ND) and National Security Program (NSP) customers.

Ideally, you are a detailed individual, interested in working on a diverse set of problems and able to easily integrate with teams composed of mechanical, chemical, and materials engineers. Occasional travel will be required. Engineered safety and work authorization are instrumental to the way work is accomplished in Org. 7540 and a key work activity for all employees.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Provide support to, or lead, one or more Product Realization Teams (PRTs) involved in designing, developing, testing, and delivering high quality power source products to challenging specifications.
  • Support small lot development battery builds for evaluation and testing including identifying/implementing design and process improvements, providing engineering oversight, and technical problem resolution.
  • Interface with customers concerning product performance requirements.
  • Work with external suppliers to ensure products are built as intended and evaluating test results.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and relevant experience defined by the following parameters:¿
  • An Associate’s degree in a relevant discipline plus nine (9) years of directly related relevant work experience; or¿
  • A High School Diploma plus thirteen (13) years of directly related relevant work experience.*¿

*Equivalent education and experience must be engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D S&E, Materials Science candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following: ¿

  • Graduate degree in Materials Science or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.
  • Experience in a research and development environment.
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques.
  • Experience working on teams consisting of multidisciplinary and multi-disciplinary experimentalists, modelers, and theorists with a common goal.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for giving presentations, preparing reports, writing articles, and explaining the important aspects of technical work to customers.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience: ¿

  • Experience working safely around mitigated hazards associated with general laboratory environments.
  • Proven experience designing, fabricating and/or testing primary or secondary lithium batteries and components.
  • Experience in product design, development, fabrication, and qualification of hardware. Particularly beneficial would be experience with the ND production realization and qualification processes.
  • Experience with the development, assembly, or testing of electronic components and boards.
  • Proven evidence of excellent teaming, interpersonal and written communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated self-starter with a record of technical accomplishments in relevant technical areas.
  • Experience in developing methods, processes, technical work documents and procedures.
  • Previous experience in the development and conducting of test plans for hardware including environmental testing.
  • Experience leading teams composed of engineers and support personnel with diverse technical skills.
  • Experience negotiating requirements and deliverables

About Our Team:

Department 7445, Power Sources Design and Development is part of the integrated Power Sources Technology Group. The Power Source organization provides R&D, engineering, and production of power sources including thermal batteries, thermoelectrics, and lithium primary and secondary cell batteries, as well as research into many other new power source technologies. While the primary customer of the Power Sources Group is NNSA, there is a growing customer base including DoD, other DOE offices, and commercial entities.
