What Your Job Will Be Like:
The Pulsed Power Sciences Center (1600) is seeking a dynamic and experienced manager to lead the High Energy Density (HED) Material Physics group. This role focuses on leading the development and application of theory/modeling/simulation frameworks and experimental platforms—from gas guns to the Z Facility—to address a wide range of material property research elements for programs within the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). This position also serves as the Deputy Executive for the NNSA Assessment Science (AS) Program at Sandia, responsible for establishing resource allocations and priorities in this vital area.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership and coordination for the Center’s research activities in Dynamic Material Properties, Dense Plasma Physics, Hydrodynamics, and Radiation flow as part of NNSA’s AS program.
- Oversee and inspire a highly creative team of managers and workforce members, including responsibilities for hiring, professional development, and performance management.
- Partner with Sandia’s Nuclear Deterrence Program Management Office and the NNSA’s Office of Experimental Sciences to set the strategic direction of the AS program and define and track programmatic milestones.
- The 1640 Senior Manager serves on the Center Leadership Team (CLT) and will for example participate in developing and executing a strategic plan for the Center.
- Integrate the Center’s research efforts across Sandia and other national laboratories within the NNSA framework.
- Optimize the capabilities of the Z Facility for dynamic material property research in collaboration with other groups across Center 1600.
- Oversee operations of several gas gun and smaller-scale pulsed power experimental research facilities for dynamic material properties research.
- Act as a visible advocate for Sandia’s existing programs within national and international communities; develop new national security efforts that leverage Sandia’s unique experimental and theoretical capabilities in dynamic material properties; and cultivate relationships with customers, other national laboratories, universities, and industry partners.
Are You Ready to Tackle Grand Scientific Challenges?
Join our team and achieve your ambitions while making a meaningful impact on our nation’s security.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$184,400 - $313,700
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Master’s or PhD in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related STEM field
- A minimum of eight years of relevant experience
- Five or more years of demonstrated leadership and/or managerial experience
- Technical competency and effective written and oral communication skills as demonstrated through a history of conference presentations and peer review publications
- Current, active DOE Q security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
- Technical competency in experimental, theoretical, or computational dynamic material properties or high energy density science as demonstrated through program leadership or publications in refereed journals
- Ability to articulate a clear vision and objectives for the organization
- Proven ability to develop collaborations with external organizations and successfully advance an organization's influence on issues of national importance in a competitive technical environment with limited funding
- A solid understanding of National Security programs, including experience with NNSA defense programs
- Experience with experimental facilities and a commitment to excellence in the operational formalities associated with high-risk environments, such as high-voltage systems and gas guns
- A strong national/international reputation in your technical area of expertise, with broad knowledge of physical science activities in other agencies
- A demonstrated history of technical innovation
About Our Team:
Group 1640 establishes Sandia as a world leader in multi-Mbar material science. The Z-machine allows us to create and diagnose large material samples for comparatively long timescales to examine the response of materials at extremely high energy densities. In addition to Z, the group also conducts research at other Sandia facilities (STAR and DICE) and at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. We design, analyze, and optimize experiments using multi-physics simulation codes, develop the next generation codes, and employ quantum mechanics to gain understanding of materials at normal and extreme conditions.
Posting Duration:
This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.
Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.
EEO:
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
